A program of traditional polyphonic Georgian songs and chants by Ensemble Adilei on their first U.S. tour!
Adilei’s main passion lies in the songs from the province of Guria in Western Georgia, a style often compared to jazz because of its strong improvisational component where all the voice parts move independently of each other to create contrapuntal polyphony. Gurian song is also characterized by krimanchuli, a yodeling technique often present in the upper voice. For the members of Adilei singing is the primary mode of communication with the world: it is more of a lifestyle than a performance practice — it is not just relegated to official concerts. They sing every time they gather, wherever that may be. Learn more about Adilei on their website or in this video.
Tenores de Aterúe will be opening for the Ensemble Adilei concert. Learn more about Tenores here.
Concert tickets are $20, workshop participation is $25; $40 for both.
