Double Edge Theatre is a Center of Art,
Living Culture, and Art Justice

Double Edge Theatre rooted on a transformed farm in Ashfield, Massachusetts. Since moving from Boston in 1994, we have been growing into a vibrant hub for cultural exchange, collective performance creation, and long-term artistic partnerships that work at the intersection of art, place, and social transformation. Guided by our values, everything at our Center — from environmental stewardship to artist housing to educational training and immersive theatre — invites people across identities and geographies to share skills, build knowledge, and nurture a Living Culture for transformative Art Justice.

Within the framework of Living Culture, anyone is invited to participate in Double Edge. Throughout over 40 years of listening we have learned to work authentically and earnestly with artists, collaborators and partners.

On the platform of Art Justice, we build equity and solidarity with deliberation and intentionality. We are also committed to sustainability, artist housing, and environmental justice.

Double Edge resides on the ancestral homelands of the Nipmuc, Pocumtuck, and the Wabanaki Confederacy. We acknowledge and recognize the Indigenous Peoples who reside here and those who have lived, cultivated, and travelled on these lands for millennia. Their presence must be named after having been invisibilized for hundreds of years.

We also name and honor Susannah Honesty and Heber Honestman, two formerly enslaved people who were the original founders of Huntstown, now called Ashfield.

On the platform of Art Justice, we build equity and solidarity with deliberation and intentionality. This commitment includes the artists with whom we collaborate; the neighbors with whom we trade or work; our residency and training participants; and the consultants who helped to guide us. The mission / values / vision / work of Double Edge will always reflect the larger population of our region / our state / our country. Our people, our Ensemble, our collaborators identify themselves rather than being defined by others. Double Edge protects the silence of our internal space, while simultaneously ensuring that no one is silenced
