Double Edge is a model for a living community – one with a robust local economy, thriving ecosystems, healthy people and strong cultural identity. About ten years ago, the Ensemble started thinking that prioritization of Greening, and the necessity of moving DE off the grid, was essential, not only as giveback for what we receive from Nature, but also as a model for theatres, around the country, and other organizations who are themselves modeling unsustainable building and operating practices. No one can be exempt, particularly, theatres with so many audience members continually involved in habitual behavior.
Three years ago we banned single use plastic from the farm for our students, audience (it’s in the audience preshow letter) and for our own daily living. We are slowly replacing all plastic wrapped products, at a cost to our budget. We have started with solar hot water, and electric. We would like to replace all of our heating systems and dream of building a solar farm and multi-acre apiary and wildflower sanctuary. We plan to spread the word through all of our theatrical networks about the importance of these steps in public spaces.
